Travel, Lodging and Program Costs

PROGRAM COSTS

AstroTech is funded by a generous grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation, allowing us to offer it for FREE to all accepted participants.

  • There is no fee to apply.
  • The registration fee is waived for all participants.
  • AstroTech will provide the required equipment and software used during the in-person summer school.
  • Airfare or other transportation: AstroTech will cover the cost of economy-class airfare. For those living closer to Berkeley, the cost of ground transportation will be covered.
  • Lodging: All accepted participants are provided with free lodging at a hotel where all AstroTech participants and instructors stay, within walking distance to the summer school site at UC Berkeley.

Other costs: Participants are responsible for all other costs and incidentals.

TRAVEL

Arrival and Departure: The summer school will begin at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Monday June 23, 2025 of the summer school week.  Participants traveling from outside of Berkeley will arrive the evening of Sunday June 22, 2025.  Days will be full of activities and participants are expected to attend the entire summer school.The summer school will conclude the evening of Friday June 27, with participants departing on Saturday June 28, 2025.

Airport Travel: Plan to arrive and depart from either Oakland International Airport (OAK) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO).  Check back later for information about transit options between airports and participant lodging for the summer school.

Ground Transportation: Ground transportation between participant home and local airport: Participants flying to attend the AstroTech Summer School are responsible for transportation costs between their home and airport of origin.

Parking: For those that need parking, the nearest open parking garage to Campbell Hall is Stadium Parking Garage, about a 6-minute walk to Campbell Hall. 

LODGING

All participants are provided with free lodging at  The Graduate Hotel where all AstroTech participants and instructors stay, within walking distance to the summer school site at UC Berkeley. There are a wide range of affordable eating options. Lodging is double-occupancy (shared rooms, 2 beds per room). ISEE will match you with a roommate based on the rooming preferences in your traveler questionnaire (if you have any questions contact astrotech-admin@ucsc.edu)

Participants who live close are invited to stay with the group at the hotel to take advantage of social and networking opportunities, but may opt to stay home if they prefer.

ISEE will make the reservations for you on our group contract. Please do not contact the hotel directly. ISEE will provide you with your specific reservation number when available.

Meals: Lunch is provided for all participants during the five days of the summer school. Participants will need to cover the costs of breakfasts and dinners during the summer school, choosing from a wide range of options within walking distance of the hotel.

There will be an AstroTech-sponsored Partner Event with appetizers one evening during the week and a celebration dinner on the final evening.
